Tommy goes to work cutting the scallop shape on the doors with the band saw. After cutting the shape for all four sides, he glues and clamps them together.

Boats, logs and claps - Oh MY! In Part One of the federal table wrap-up, T-Chisel visits Steve Brown, head of the Cabinet and Furniture Making Department and a 1990 graduate, of the North Bennet Street School. Steve provides a little last-minute how-to information on getting the embellishments perfect and critiques the table as the end of this project nears.

In Part Two of the federal table wrap-up, Tommy talks to Steve about cutting the banding with a table saw. Then, Tommy drops by the shop to see what Eli is working on. With the table finished, the next project is already underway.

Breaking out the chisels, Tommy demonstrates how he cut the patterns into the door's inner edge. Then, with the doors ready to go, he shows how he will set the hinges. The morning had been somewhat chaotic in Tommy's shop, but now that all his visitors have left he's determined to get focused--and get finished!

Tommy reviews how the doors are coming along as well as his plans for them. With the doors and hardware installed on the secretary, he concentrates on cleaning out the corners then shows how he centered the door overlap. Tommy's getting closer and closer to completion of the project!

The overlap is done, and now it's time to tackle the lock. Tommy runs over the problems it poses before setting the top, bottom and center lock. When he's done, he creates and sets the back panels for the glass.

Tommy has dropped off the top of the secretary to the finisher in Salem, and it's time to work on the lower half. He reviews the plans for the base molding and, using a mockup, shows how everything will fit together.

With the backboard off, Tommy breaks out the scrub plane and starts removing material from the inner case sides. When he's done, he turns the case on its back to attach the transitional piece.

The base molding is on so, after downing a double espresso, Tommy gets to work sanding it. Then he reviews how he made the transitional pieces and attached them to the feet. Next, Tommy attaches the feet to the base and points out the horrible mistake he made and how he's going to fix it.

The door pattern has been cut and Tommy now goes to work on the corners with a chisel and a router plane. Once the corners are done, Tommy can send the pattern to the glass company.

Tommy is upset because the hinges have arrived but they have company markings on them, rendering them useless. So, Tommy goes to work on the doors. First, he shows where he got the inspiration and the pattern. Then, after cutting the pattern, he sands the edges so they are smooth and traces the lines.

It's now time to put in the lock. Tommy shows how to mark the position on the lid and then goes to work cutting out a hole. He then demonstrates his fine chisel skills before putting the lock in place. After he attaches the lid, it's done!

With one of the hinges attached, the second one can be added. After it is attached, Tommy has to cut an angle at the top so the lid will close. Tommy then checks to make sure the lid fits correctly.

With the upper case taken off, it's now time to put the lid on. Tommy explains the whole process for viewers, from fitting it to the front to putting on the hinges.

Tommy goes to work adding the breadboards to the ends of the lid. After creating the breadboards, he shows how to cut the end of the board so it will fit. He then demonstrates how to attach and detach the breadboard.

It's now time to cut the sides of the case. This is risky business because any mistakes cannot be corrected and Tommy is understandably nervous. After the cuts are made, he then hand-planes and takes a chisel to the edges.

The carving is done on the inside door so Tommy starts planing the lid. He first shows how it fits with the Bombe and then begins hand-planing the board. He reviews how he planes the wood, works the planer and sharpens the blade.

Now that the drawer front has been laid out, Tommy takes a V-tool and goes to work carving. He then reviews how he works the pattern while listening to Run-DMC.

Tommy shows how he created the beautiful sand shaded fan on the top of the table. After going through the construction process step by step, Tommy reviews how he inserted the piece into the tabletop. It's so easy even Al can do it!

Tommy and Al use the whiteboard to review how the table drawer was constructed. The drawer looks as if it was built using three separate pieces of wood but it's one banding with three miters on it. They then move to the table saw to demonstrate.

With the banding now cut, it's time to put on the cuff. Tommy outlines how to construct the table foot and cuff then reviews some user submissions.

Moving to the table saw, Tommy demonstrates how to create the bandings he reviewed in the previous video. Using a zero tolerance wood insert, he attaches a fence and shows how to cut the block. After cutting a few boards, he shows how the bandings enhance the completed table's look.

Tommy takes a moment to talk about the Federal style table's bandings. Moving to the whiteboard, he outlines how he created the look. It might all be a little confusing but it will make sense when he moves to the table saw in the next video.

Tommy and Al dive into discussing bellflowers with special guests Eli and Brian. Tommy demonstrates how he made the lines on the table leg. He then reviews how to make the bellflowers and Eli cuts them. Afterwards Tommy and Brian discuss his work so far.

Tommy takes some de-natured alcohol and wipes it on the completed carving to demonstrate how the grain texture will look. On close inspection, viewers can see that each of the sweep carvings is a little different. Tommy then shows how to remove the material along the perimeter of the shell. After the door is completed, he discusses the work he needs to do on the drawers.

Tommy demonstrates how he is cutting the shell. Using a chisel, he shows how working with the grain poses a unique set of challenges. He then utilizes the V-tool on the design and laments his lack of carving skills.

Tommy demonstrates how the prospect door will fit into the piece. He then shows how he copied the design from a photo to paper and then to the wood block. He makes multiple attempts at cutting the block and laughs about how many mistakes he's made so far. It's going to be a long road.

Quad Tapering and Al Babble--Tommy and Al sit down to talk about the spade foot of the Federal table. Tommy outlines how he used the drill press to create the spade foot on the marker board and then reviews how he created the tapered table leg. Al concludes with discussing the Red Sox season opener.

Al expounds on the Federal period, particularly the furniture of its time, while Tommy demonstrates the Federal-style table he is making, showing off its embellishment and foot. The conversation turns to how to best begin a project. Al recounts the steps he takes when he first gets a piece of wood, and Tommy hits the marker board to show how he diagrams a piece of work.

Tommy discusses how he tackled the most difficult part of secretary so far, the compound return angles at the top of the pediment. The moldings in the front and the side look the same but are completely different. He moves to the bench to illustrate the problem and how he cut the moldings to fit. As viewers can see from the disastrous state of his shop, this problem was a tough one.
