08/22/2008, 17:48 | Arts & Mysteries with Adam Cherubini - Blog I really appreciate the overwhelming response I received from my tool offerings. Thank you all so much for your interest and support. It really means a lot to me personally.
As I said when I started accepting orders for tools 2 months ago, I have no intention of making tools full time. I am first and foremost a period cabinetmaker. I feel doing the work has informed my sensibilities regarding tools and I have no doubt that will continue.
I'm not sure what the future holds for me. I'm hoping to produce tools on speculation and sell them as they become available. This will allow me greater design freedom and perhaps the ability to use whatever materials I have on hand at the moment. I'm not exactly sure how this will work. But I'll post information here and at Woodworking in America conference. Being able to meet my commitments in the uncompromising way to which I'm accustomed means I have turn off the tool making at present.

Hi Folks
Well - that's that. I've finished in the workshop and put the bench in the back of the van ready for the journey to Westonbirt tomorrow. I've just about finished all the planes I was hoping to make and I'm sat at the computer now printing out signs and labels. The rain is falling outside (obviously having a last go before the coming heatwave...........) but I'm not worried. I know its going to be a great weekend :)
I've made a couple of planes from some Indonesian Rosewood I've been hoarding. One is the pretty little smoother I showed off yesterday - the other is a monster Miter plane. She looks just awesome! If anyone is interested they'll be on my bench this coming weekend :)
Shock of the day was the Wife coming out to the workshop with the phone. "It's Konrad", she says. My jaw drops - not Konrad Sauer??
Oh, yes - a quick call before he heads to the airport to make his way over. It was great to have a quick chat (and also to find I'm not the only one feverishly packing bags!) and I'm really looking forward to spending a few days in his company. Did I mention Konrad and I will have our benches set up next to each other (along with Infill maker Bill Carter!) in the Classic Hand Tools marquee?
So make sure you head over to Westonbirt this weekend for the "Festival of the Tree" - you won't be disappointed!

Wendell Castle Interview - Part 1

To start off the second day in Phil Lowe's "Building a Demilune Table" class, we rub jointed 34 pieces with 15° angles on each end into chevrons (shown above). I thought I knew how to smear on glue and rub two pieces of wood together, but Phil showed us how to first size the end grain with a very thin layer of glue rubbed in to fill in the xylem and phloem. That, Phil says, keeps the glue used in the rub joint from being sucked up into the end grain and makes the resulting joint stronger.
After our 17 chevrons were made, we screwed and glued six of them around the edge
of the pattern we routed yesterday (being careful to keep screws out of the leg-joint
areas). Then, we cut close to the pattern edge on the band saw, and touched up any
wonky spots with a spokeshave. Let's just say I got some spokeshave practice. The
final step for each layer was to pattern shape it on the router table. The rim was
built up with three more bricked layers of chevrons and half pieces, sawing (spokeshaving)
and routing each layer as we went.
The most exciting moment of the day for me (and no doubt for many of the class members),
was unscrewing the rim from the pattern and seeing the shape emerge. That poplar sure
is pretty – but I suspect I'll like the bird's-eye maple veneer even more. We scribed
lines back from the front edge, and some people have already cut away the waste from
the back. I was at the end of the line at the band saw and there's no power-tool use
after 6 p.m. at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking (more on that tomorrow). So my
first task on Wednesday (after plugging in the glue pot for delightful olfactory ambiance),
will be to remove that waste. Then it's on to planing the tapers on the legs.

The next project after the picture frame is a box making.
There are two purposes for this project.
Mitre joint; to cut the boards at 45 degree to assemble.
To predict how the material moves and to know how to minimize the trouble caused by the movement.

So I brought lots of boxes from home.
Some tiered lunch boxes are badly warped.
It is more difficult than you expect to make a box from wood.

Everyone started making after the lecture. It took two weeks for them to finish.
The most difficult part was to fit the lid perfectly to the body, but they did well.
After five months of practise at the college you can make a box.
It is quite a progress.


Buying Tools Online - Craigslist, etc.
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Wood Destruction by a WoodscrubI got it home and discovered there was no way the seller could have used the thing. Probably ever. The crimp on the spade connector to the switch wasn't tight, and the grinder would not turn on. No biggie, new connector properly crimped, and it works beautifully.
At the end of this minor adventure, I realized I should document the thought process I went through.
I knew going in that a cheap tool WILL have flaws. Regardless of the story given by the seller. So how to minimize the risk is the real challenge.
For the above mentioned grinder, I decided before going in that the most difficult thing to repair FOR ME would be bearings. Wheels are cheap (and would probably be replaced anyway), electrical is easy to me, even a motor can be replaced if absolutely necessary. But bearings would be the hardest thing to me and absolutely a deal breaker. Grinders are cheap enough new that I wouldn't even take a free one with bad bearings.
So when I got there, and the seller wasn't in a hurry to plug it in and show me that it worked, I just did a wiggle check and spin check on the bearings. They felt good so I paid and left.
When I bought the tablesaw and jointer combo last year, bearings and gears were my main concerns. I knew it was rusty, but surface rust repair was within my reach. The guts were nice, only the bare cast iron surfaces were rusty.
So pick the 'deal breaker' problem(s) and stick to your guns. If you can press bearings all day long, but electrical wiring is a mystery to you, find the stuff with good electrics and bad bearings. If all you are comfortable with is painting, then find the uglies with layers of klown paint and make them purdy.
There are deals out there, but what's a deal to me may not be a deal to you.
History, Archeology, and Interpreting
07/16/2008, 15:44 | Arts & Mysteries with Adam Cherubini - Blog I've been offering my sense of the changing world of reproduction furniture making for a few years now. I won't repeat it here accept to say yesterday's reproductions probably won't be viewed as accurate by scholars (and thus museum visitors, and thus furniture customers) in the future. The reason is that our understanding of period furniture is continuing to grow and change.
Just some quick definitions before I continue. (Please correct me if I get this wrong.) History is the study of the past through documentary evidence. Anthropology is the study of the past through oral tradition and contemporary human behavior. Archeology is the study of the past through found artifacts (like furniture? Does that make us archeologists in a way? I think so).
So if our understanding of furniture is changing, is archeology changing? You bet. Less than a hundred years ago, a pre-eminent archeologist drove his motorcade into the desert with his native porters, interpreters, and diggers. Their goal? Find the treasure and claim it for the British Museum. Howard Carter, the archeologist who found King Tut's tomb, the archeologist on whom Indiana Jones was patterned, didn't set up string lines and wasn't interested in midden pile analysis. Archeology has come a long long way.
For the most part, archeologists don't generally intersect our sphere. Unless you read Archeology magazine, or National Geographic, you may not know the name of a single archeologist. But one name you should know is Dr. James Deetz. Deetz' excellent little book, "In Small things Forgotten: The Archeology of Early American Life" provides us with a deeper understanding of the people who made the things we reproduce. It offers explanations of iconographic motifs we may encounter in our work. I think it's a must read.
In addition to being a fine archeologist, Deetz was also the Assistant Director of Plimoth Planation 1967-1978 where he:
"transformed Plimoth Plantation from a mannequin-furnished commemoration of the Mayflower passengers to a vibrant living history museum replete with accurately-costumed character interpreters engaged in the nitty-gritty of daily life."

Personally, I don't care for first person interpreting. Exposition, communicating the basic who, what, when, where, and how, can be particularly challenging for both interpreter and visitor alike. Viewed in this light, it seems a step backward, making the topic more difficult to understand instead of less so. But for Deetz, who was at least in part if not wholly responsible for the first person interpretation at Plimoth, the goal was to communicate more than the basic text book facts. He wanted us to get to know the people of Plimoth intimately.
Like many other pursuits, the bar of basic competency is rising for interpreters, and reproduction furniture makers alike. This is the way of things. I think it's okay to let the bar drift over our heads and continue on as we have. Many of us have started so far under the bar that it's difficult to see from where we now stand. What I don't think is okay is denying the existence of the bar. I think a quick read through Deetz' book, preferably followed by a visit to Plimoth will be all the proof you need.

P.S. I guess I should add that I see the exposition as similar to the dimensions of a piece of furniture. You can get those right and still miss the mark (as many have). My story about Deetz intends to relate the intimate understanding of past cultures to the intimate understanding of objects like furniture. This is in part what "Material Culture" is all about. Grad students taking part in Winterthur's Masters program in American Material Culture are learning about furniture and expressing values that were unknown to the Carter/Nutting collectors.

00/00/0000, 00:00 | The Refined EdgeCreating the door panels is my next task in this cabinet build and I will be working on this over the next days. I'm also working on the stand design which has not yet been finalized. I have a feeling I will be modifying the original drawings and doing something a little different here. I'm just waiting to determine how the enclosed cabinet looks to me and what stand design provides the best complement for the cabinet. This goes back to a term I coined a few months ago on an earlier project.
The term I coined is "dynamic design" and allows the maker to dynamically modify a design as the build progresses. The modifications in design are directly attributable to how the project is taking shape, as opposed to moving forward with an existing design which might or might not make sense any longer. The concept of dynamic design and artistic freedom go hand in hand. I mention to my clients that the design will most likely evolve as the project continues and to expect some changes, most likely small ones. There needs to be a certain trust between the maker and client to be able to accomplish this, something I strive to provide the client.
I should have the beginnings of the door panels done in the next day or so along with resawing of the veneers I will be using.
Work Sharp Hones Tools Quickly and Easily
00/00/0000, 00:00 | WoodworkingONLINE.comBack in March, the folks from ProTool (the folks that make the Drill Doctor) came into our offices to show us their new Work Sharp system for sharpening woodworking tools. You’ll be hearing it advertised on the Paul Harvey show. They left their WS3000 for us to play with in our shop.
One day not too long ago, I went to use the Work Sharp to hone some chisels for our new public television show, The Woodsmith Shop (more on that later). Well, I couldn’t find all the parts to the Work Sharp, so I resorted to honing the chisels by hand using wet/dry sandpaper. A few weeks later, I asked Steve Johnson, our shop craftsman, about the Work Sharp’s missing parts. He said that they weren’t missing and walked me around the corner of his work area and showed me the box that contained the “missing” parts. Turns out he had the Work Sharp squirreled away to keep it from disappearing. He says he uses it all the time for touching up his chisels. For example, when he’s chopping mortises or cleaning up mortises, all he needs to do is walk over to the Work Sharp, and in just a few seconds he’s got a sharp edge. He thinks it’s a great addition to his shop for keeping an edge on his tools.
Work Sharp has come out with a homeowner/DIY version of their system called the WS2000. It uses the same motor as the WS3000 but doesn’t have the built-in speed reduction and doesn’t come with the finer grits of abrasive that you’d use for honing. It’s meant for grinding a quick edge or, as one homeowner did, ground a sharp edge on his garden shovel.
Building the Woodshop: Part VIII - Roofing

Ah, the hard work was done... Or was it? I got the roof framed, and it was time now to get it shingled. Before I get to that, the last little bit of framing needed to happen - the cupola. Here you can see the base I had constructed while framing up the roof:
You can alsosee the roofing materialsnowhere near I wanted them to be - I wanted them on theroof, but there they are on the ground... Of course, they are the heavy ones - architectural layered shingles, which basically means each bundle weighs twice as much as a regular bundle... but I digress...
Here's a rear view of the building, showing the cupola framing and therear overhang I neglected to include in the last installment of this unending adventure:
It was much easier to frame up the cupola on the ground, as there were several angled cuts to make and it's easier to make any adjustments where the saw is closer than a run down the ladder... besides, that 8/12 pitch is hard enough to stand on. That - and I wanted to make sure I got the weather vane installed properly. I purchased it from The Weathervane Factory located in Bar Harbor Maine. I had considered something more whimsical, but in the end I am happy with this purchase - it fits the finished design of the building quite well. Here is the framed cupola, complete with vane, on the floor of the shop:
And - of course - in it's final resting place on the top center of the shop:
The cupola is a functioning roof vent, along with gable vents at each end - there should be plenty of air traveling through the attic space with this setup. I used pre-made louvers just to save on time and keep them a bit more maintenance free... In retrospect, I think if I were to build it now, I would use a larger roof on it - something with a little Asian influence - but, I'm not going to tear the thing down for it!
Anyhow - I had the roof sheathed now, the cupola framed and in place, and all that was left was to heft all the shingles up onto the roof. By my calculations, it was going to take about 18-1/2 square or so, or 56 bundles. That's 56 trips up the ladder carrying some god-awful heavy material. Of course - it was mid August, the hottest part of the year... You can't shingle a roof unless it either the hottest or coldest part of the year, you know.
I have mentioned that one of the reasons I was able to build my own shop was because I had become my dad's caregiver after mom passed away. Dad had come to live with us right atNew Year's, and did quite well at first. But it was about at this time that his condition (Alzheimer's) became quite severe. It made working on the shop during the day difficult at best... Dad had taken to wandering off on me, wouldn't come out to the shop to "help" me any longer, and I couldn't leave him by himself for more than about 10 to 15 minutes, even if he was sleeping. Usually I would have to wait for my wife to get home from her work to "take over" for me so I could work on the roofing in the evening. The nights were long, and the weather cooler in the evening, so it wasn't all bad, I guess...
We took him in to see a doctor and she suggested we contact Hospice of North Idaho - that they might be able to help us out. What a godsend those people were... They came out three times a week, giving dad care and me some time to run errands and get some work done. I cannot thank them enough for their exemplary service, they were truly wonderful.
As a result, I don't have any photos of progress on the roof so here it is magically complete, about a week after Labor Day:
It took me about a month to get it from the picture before to that one. First to go up was the class A chimney for the wood stove, the mast for the electrical service, then the fascia board followed bythe shingleunderlayment Here you can see the mast for the electrical service, and my temporary scaffolding re-erected after being torn down when the roof framing was completed:
It was no fun doing this side of the roof - an 8:12 pitch gets hard to stand on after a while, and I'm no fan of heights... It took all of my courage at some points. I did use roof jacks for this side, which made it easier.
It ended up taking about19 squares of shingles to complete, I used the heaviest kind (of course!), an architectural "layered" shingle that has a 35year warranty. What I really remember is how exhausted I was by this time... When I did work on the shop, it was ata frantic pace. The shingles were heavy, of course - and I can still feel the pain in my shoulder from lifting them into place. I had to wear tape over my fingertips, as rubbing the stone on the shingles had worn my fingernails down to where they were bloody. Worst of all was that Dad was a 24 hour a day job, as he had no sense of day or night anymore.
Dad wasrapidly getting worse, and I stopped work on the shop to spend time with him. He passed away on the 21st of September.
The next month was spent bringing him back to his home to be buried next to mom, and to get together with family to decide what to do with their estate.
Getting back, it was well into October. Life was about to change for me - no longer tied to the house, I needed to get back out into the workforce.My focus now was on updating my resume and on storing what I had received as an inheritance from the estate. When I started the shop, we had no idea how long dad was going to be with us, and there was a finite amount of money to work with. We had it worked out where once the shop was complete, dad and I could start working out of it, making money out of it, hopefully enough to allow me to remain as his caregiver. It turned out that wasn't to be, the time with him was too short, and the shop was incomplete. I wasn't far enough along with it for it to work for its income, so it would have to take the back burner while I once again joined the 9 to 5'ers.
When everything was settled, I did spend some time on the shop buttoning it up for the coming winter. First was to put some siding on the cupola so the flashing would keep out the rains:
Next was to get the windows and doors installed so the building would be enclosed:
It was finally starting to look like a building! The overhead door is a 10'x10' "residential" door from Overhead Door... I'm quite disappointed in it, it'snot a very tough door and the panel with the windows is too high to look out of - the only other option would have been to have them be too low...
I also got the electrical panel hooked up so there was power, but that was about it for the winter. The next thing I knew, I was reporting daily to a new job and my time for working on the shop was drastically cut back to a few hours a week. With the cold weather and darkness of winter approaching, not much would happen until spring could shake off the icy grip of what seemed to bethe longest, coldest winter... But there were a few things I could do...
Coming up next - knee braces and some other miscellaneous structural work, and hooking up the electrical...

Getting in Touch With Our Inner Europe

I think I was in the DeWalt booth when I suddenly felt the tide turn.
One of the company’s product managers was explaining the new guard on the DeWalt jobsite
table saw. It was one of the new riving-knife-based guards that all the manufacturers
are installing on their machines to comply with new government standards.
“This guard is so easy to use,” the product manager says, “the user won’t have any
excuse or reason not to use it.”
And with that he installed all three components of the guard on the saw in less than
17 seconds (I timed him).
When I say the tide turned at that moment, I mean that at that moment I realized how
many times I had heard that same speech – and almost those same words – used by other
manufacturers as they introduced their new European-style guards during the last 12
months.
Bosch, Delta, Steel City, Grizzly and Jet have all been eager to show off how easy
their new guards are to use. Whereas during the last 13 years I’ve covered the industry,
usually the guard was discussed like this: “And there is a clear plastic guard.”
Those old guards, which were required by government regulations, were practically
useless (as we all know). And they’re rarely used. Heck most people probably couldn’t
find their table saw’s guard hiding somewhere in their shop.
But now suddenly a safe saw is a selling point. Wow. That’s a big change. As I began
to look around a bit, I realized that many European-style tools are now infiltrating
our American shops. Don’t believe me?
In the last three years Festool has gone from being a niche toolmaker to a company
that makes the tools that everyone wants to beat. The Festool Domino, a feat of European
engineering, is probably the most visible evidence of this. But you also see other
clues: DeWalt is introducing two
plunging circular saws to compete directly with the Festool TS 55 EQ.
Last year Jet Tools introduced a new European jointer/planer – and this year is introducing
another version of that machine with a helical cutterhead. SawStop has always used
European guarding on its saws and has successfully used safety as a selling point
– and the company just continues to expand.
Even Grizzly Industrial – long a mainstay of Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturing –
has been putting down some Teutonic and Italian roots. Parts of some of Grizzly’s
sliding table saws come from Germany and Italy. And right now, there are four Grizzly
products that are made in Germany, including a sliding table saw and a wet sharpener.
Plus the company is introducing more European-style machinery that is designed in
Germany but built in China.
So what does this mean for U.S. woodworkers? Good things, for the most part. I’ve
seen what Festool is planning on introducing to this country in the coming years,
and a lot of it is exciting stuff. Plus, I’ve been in European workshops and can say
they are safer and healthier places to work.
But the tools are more expensive (usually because of the quality). And I find that
many of their machinery setups are more complex than ours (mostly because they use
the guards properly).
So as the DeWalt’s new table saw guard clicked back into place onto the top of the
saw I concluded a couple things: American woodworkers are due for some changes in
the way we work. But I also bet that as Americans, we’ll find a way to mix the Budweiser
with the Beaujolais to suit our tastes.

I went to see Shiori Taguchi's metal workshop during summer holiday. It was an open day of her workshop, and she was running a copper pan forging class. She gave a brief instruction on how to forge the copper sheet to a teenager student, then left him and observed his work from a distance. "I tend to leave the students do", she said.
A few days later I had a chat with senior woodworkers on 'how to teach'. "I stopped giving too much instruction to the students, even when they are about to make a mistake. I rather tell them afterwards why it happened." said a man who runs a private furniture making school.
Those words made me think about our education at the college.
Are we giving too much to the students, hoping them to absorb as much as possible while they are at school?
Are we taking away their opportunity of trial and error, worring an error could be a serious injury?
Are we putting too much stuff into their schedule and they end up with even no time for a mistake and remake?
What we think "not enough" might be "just enough" for students.

A package from Mike Wenzloff arrived late in the day yesterday. I knew this one was coming, and it was all I could do to keep myself from tearing into it. But I waited - because there were two items for Riley as well, and I figured he would want to open it. Inside were two pairs of small saws - a rip and a crosscut. Riley's pair are quite small - but fit his small hands very well. At his request - his first project is going to be to learn to cut dovetails.

The other pair of saws were quite specifically designed. Some time ago, I asked Mike if he would be able to make a dovetail sized saw to be used specifically for cutting exotic woods. He was quite sure he could - so we moved on to the rest of the details. Ebony handles were decided on fairly early in the process, thanks to a good friend (thanks again Dan). Mike sent me several photos of different handle designs to choose from. We settled on a modified Patterson handle - and I have to say - I cannot imagine anything more comfortable. It feels as though I shaped it myself. The blade is 8" long and has 2" of usable depth.

Riley and I called Mike to let him know they arrived safe and sound and to thank him for doing such a wonderful job. He asked if I had tried them out yet and I explained that I hadn't - but the first use would be to cut the slot for an adjuster on an A2 jointer. The long silence was finally broken with “Oh geeze - now I am nervous!”

As I suspected - the rip saw worked perfectly and cut a beautiful clean kerf in the Brazilian Rosewood handle. So thanks again Mike for two wonderful pairs of purpose built saws.
