Woodworking Community Happenings
00/00/0000, 00:00 | The Wood WhispererAs many of probably already know, there is an incredible conference taking place in Berea, KY called Woodworking in America. The conference is the brainchild of the folks over at Popular Woodworking and simply put, its a galoots dream! From vendors to seminars to hands on classes, its all about hand tools! Many of my blogging associates will be in attendance, and you can follow their experiences on their own blogs. One person in particular who will be blogging on a daily basis is Mitch from the Furnitude Blog. You can follow his adventures right on his blog.
Now most of the other folks who might be blogging about the event are in The Wood Whisperer Network, and you can see all the latest posts in real-time right on TheWoodWhispererNetwork.com.
I also wanted to bring your attention to my homie Shannon Rogers’ site, The Renaissance Woodworker. He is having a giveaway sponsored by the folks at Penn State Industries, and its a good chance to get some great pen turning supplies.
So I hope everyone has a great time at the conference. Wish I could be there myself but I will have to settle for reading about your personal experiences.

Cantilevered End Table - Bonus Project of the Week
00/00/0000, 00:00 | The Wood WhispererThis week’s project is submitted by Bryan. Let’s check out what he has to say:
“This is my first piece of ‘fine’ furniture, which has helped to develop my passion for woodworking. I built this piece as part of a Furniture Design class in the architecture school during my undergrad, even though I was a finance major. The piece is made of red oak and walnut and the table tops stand at 12” and 24” respectively. I started out with all rough lumber, 5/4 red oak, and 8/4 walnut. I milled the oak with the thickness planer down to 1” thick by 3” wide for the larger side, and 1” thick by 2” wide for the smaller side. Once I had these measurements, I used the table saw to cut all of my angles for both the longer pieces and smaller ‘head’ and ‘foot’ pieces. At this point I had cut all of my oak pieces and it was time for glue up. I did this in sections. First I glued up the 3” section by combining two long pieces with the appropriate ‘head’ and ‘foot’ pieces. Once all of these smaller sections were done, I glued them together until I eventually had one long row of alternating blank sections and long sections 17” wide. I then built a jig to hold this entire piece at the appropriate angle in order to route out the section for the walnut/glass, which took a nice long 2” router bit a while to hog out. Once this step was done, I was able to put the last two outside boards to make the ends look more finished. I cut the walnut to size, drilled the holes for the dowels, cut the angle on the walnut and glued it into place, along with the red oak dowels. I used a ½ piece of wood as a spacer for the glass. I did the a similar process for the 2” smaller side, except I didn’t glue the alternating boards on the bottom section until after I meshed the two together. Once together, I glued in the missing pieces, securing the two sections forever. The last step was inserting the 17”Wx23”Lx1/2”D glass into the top section and the 17”Wx11”Lx1/2”D glass into the bottom section.”
“It is finished with about 3 coats of Danish Oil sanded down to about 400 grit and has a poly spray topcoat. Overall this is a very strong piece, and has no problem holding the glass, even with me leaning on it, as the table will tip over before the joint would ever fail. There are definitely things I would consider doing different though, but that’s the challenge for my next piece. Enjoy my cantilevered end table and thanks for all of the inspiration. As always, I look forward to the next video!

Kiwi Shed - Shop of the Week
00/00/0000, 00:00 | The Wood WhispererThis week’s shop comes from Hamish. Let’s see what he has to say:
“Thought you might like to see my little sheds that I use here in New Zealand, I have been really interested in seeing so many different styles and designs of peoples workshops. The thing I have noticed is the passion that people have in designing and building their own space.”
“I started my own business in June 2007, just making work benches and now have expanded to garage and wardrobe systems. I have had no training in joinery or woodworking but have studied in Draughting. Watching The Wood Whisperer has been very interesting. If you noticed I took Marc’s design of the assembly bench to the max size. Its been really handy. Cheers. I will continue to expand into wood working over time. Keep up the good work USA.”
Here is a little more info from Hamish:
The saw is SCM SI-16W Rise & Fall Tilt Arbor Sliding Table Panel Saw
3.2m cut capacity, scorer unit, auto brake. 415v/3ph/50hz.
1500mm rip capacity
3200mm crosscut
5.5hp main motor / 1 hp scriber motor
overhead guard which i have taken off for easier cuting of 2.4 x 1.2 panels
The other big machine is a KD 54 Hot melt Edgebander, this will glue on pvc or wood edging to board or timber, trimmes and cuts egding in one go. very handy. The other machine is a Blum Mini Press which can drill hinge holes into the doors and also has removeable head which can be replaced with a 8 drill spindle head allowing you to drill muiltable holes in a work piece.
The jointer is a toolline 6inch buzzer with 1400mm table good for long pieces of timber only single phase but fine for what i use. I have a little thckness under bench 12inch. handy but only entry level. In the other cabinet shed we have a a horizontial drill press for caming and dowling and compressor and hand tools and very important fridge for lunch. Also as for the question on the legs to by benches I flat pack the benches and send around the country this allows for them to be easily removed the bolted back on. I also have a very Loving and Wise Wife who fully supports me in my work and does keep me from getting to carried away in buying to much stuff. Thanks for the questions hope this helps

Teenage Woodworker: Denis Rezendes
00/00/0000, 00:00 | WoodworkingONLINE.comIt would be easy to say that Denis Rezendes is NOT your typical teenager. But I think there are a lot of young woodworkers out there, and it’s time we started giving teens like Denis some credit. He’s posted his first instructional video at Lumberjocks.com and I really enjoyed it.
It is so basic, at a little over 12 minutes long, yet it is packed with good information for the young woodworker. As someone who has spent a few hours in front of the camera doing podcasts, I can tell you it can be nerve-racking. Only someone who is comfortable with the subject matter can be comfortable in front of the camera. Denis looks like he knows his stuff — either that or he’s a natural.
If your teenager is interested in woodworking, steer him to this video first. Then buy him a couple of tools!
Thanks to Marc Spagnuolo, at WoodWhisperer.com ( for the link) and Lumberjocks.
297 Lumber Species of the Month - Walnut
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Matt's Basement Workshop PodcastHey everyone it's time for another installment of Lumber Species of the Month...and this time we're sharing a few facts on a favorite of a lot of woodworkers - Walnut.
Once abundant throughout the United States and growing to 150 FT tall and 6 FT in diameter Walnut was heavily harvested for it's beautiful grains and colors. It's the only natural "brown" colored wood found growing in the states.
While it's still readily available the trees today average about 80-100 FT tall and usually only about 3 FT in diameter...a stark contrast from before. But still it's a beautiful wood to work with...
